The company Thermo-Calc embarked on a transformative project aimed at redesigning their program's icons. By modernizing the existing icons, making them more visually appealing, intuitive, and user-friendly.

This project spanned over a year, during which I worked diligently to deliver a fresh, cohesive, and engaging icon set.

Challenges

Old icon design
  • Maintaining Consistency: One of the key challenges was to ensure consistency across a diverse set of icons while still allowing room for creativity and innovation.
  • User-Centered Design: The icons needed to be intuitive and instantly recognizable by Thermo-Calc's user base, which included engineers and researchers from various backgrounds.
  • Compatibility: The new icons had to seamlessly integrate with the existing software interface.

Approach

  1. Research and Inspiration: The project started with a thorough research phase. The team analyzed the existing icons, gathered feedback, and explored various design trends. The inspiration from the Flat Leaf design was used as a foundation, but we were  encouraged to think outside the box.
  2. Design Iterations: Weekly sprints were organized to iterate and refine icon designs. The team experimented with different shapes, color schemes, and visual metaphors to convey complex engineering concepts succinctly.
  3. Feedback and Collaboration: Continuous communication and collaboration with Thermo-Calc's project team ensured that the new icons were not only visually appealing but also aligned with the software's functionality.
  4. User Testing: User testing played a crucial role in validating the effectiveness of the new icons. Feedback from thermocalcs employees was incorporated to make adjustments that improved icon clarity and usability.

Results

After a year of dedicated effort and creative exploration, the project yielded the following results:

  1. Modernized Icon Set: Thermo-Calc now boasts a modern and visually appealing icon set, aligning with current design trends.
  2. Improved Usability: The new icons are more intuitive and facilitate easier navigation within the software, enhancing the overall user experience.
  3. Consistency: The redesigned icons maintain a consistent visual language while allowing for creativity and innovation.
  4. User Satisfaction: User feedback has been positive, with users praising the improved clarity and aesthetics of the icons.

Conclusion: This icon design project exemplifies the successful collaboration between our two companies, techlove and Thermo-calc. By loosely basing the design on Flat Leaf principles and encouraging creative thinking, the project achieved its goals. Thermo-Calc now boasts an icon set that enhances the usability and visual appeal of their engineering software, ultimately contributing to the company's continued success.
